Poinciana / Royal (25G)

Latin Name:

Poinciana gilliesii

Description:

Poinciana gilliesii, also known as the Bird of Paradise bush/tree is a small, fast-growing tree with chartreuse foliage and clusters of large yellow flowers and long red stamens. Pruning might be necessary to control irregular growth. This is a hardy ornamental shrub that can tolerate frost. It has a low litter rate, attracts birds, bees, and butterflies, and is resistant to deer. Seeds can be poisonous to humans if ingested.

The Poinciana gilliesii requires deep, but infrequent waterings (approximately one inch per week) and grows best in full sun. Young plants need phosphorus fertilizer at the time of planting, again during the first growing season, and then every few years. Fertilizers with high nitrogen encourage excessive vegetative growth and reduce the production of flowers. Trees and shrubs are resistant to pests and diseases.
