Pine / Slash

Latin Name:

Pinus Mugo

The Mugo Pine, or Swiss Mountain Pine, is known to shape itself according to the different soil conditions and climates in which it is cultivated. It is widely grown as a shrub, but in its native European Alps, it frequently grows to a height of 60 feet, and its circumference can reach 10 feet. As a prostrate shrub, it is very hardy in zones 3-10, and perfectly suited for low, massed planting. It is known for its resinous buds and paired needles which don’t brown and fall off like many evergreens.

The Pumilio group of the Mugo pine is considered an aromatic, stimulant, antiseptic herb that produces oil which acts as an expectorant and decongestant. It is used externally and internally for respiratory infections such as whooping cough, bronchitis, and asthma. Externally, it is used for rheumatism and muscular aches, as well as a decongestant inhalant. The oil is also used commercially in perfumes and as a food flavoring. Most pines prefer full sun to light shade and are drought-resistant. The Mugo, like most pines, propagates easily from seeds, layering, and grafting, and is known for its ability to tolerate poor soil conditions. As an ornamental plant, the Mugo provides wonderful greenery all year round.
