Juniper / Blue Vase

Latin Name:

Juniperus

Description:

Junipers are evergreens that range from foot-tall ground cover to 120-foot trees. There are over 170 species and varieties of junipers in multiple forms and colors that present unlimited landscape opportunities. When used in ground cover, junipers help to control weeds and erosion. Low-growing plants are often used in foundation plantings. Trees create dense hedges, privacy walls, and windbreaks for large properties.

Foliage ranges from light to dark green and sometimes has a tinge of blue and silver; fruits are berry-like cones. Junipers are some of the hardiest landscaping plants. Although they prefer full sun and well-drained soil, junipers tolerate spells of drought and lack of sun better than most ornamental plants. However, they are not tolerant of heavy pruning. Prune the tips, but do not cut back large limbs. When planting, make sure to allow enough space between plants so roots are not crowded.

Most insect problems can be treated with insecticides: bagworms, webworms, spider mites, aphids, and leaf miners are common pests. Junipers are also susceptible to twig borers, juniper scale, rust, blight, and root rot. Most diseases are due to poor watering and too much shade.
