Fountain Grass / Red, White

Latin Name:

Pennisetum alopecuroides

Description:

Fountain grass is an upright growing plant that forms a mound of ornamental grass for accenting gardens. When in bloom, it displays a mass of color and serves as a transitional grass between landscaping themes. Fountain grass flowers in mid summer through fall, beginning with a pale purple color in spring and a coppery purple with gold foliage in the fall.

Ornamental grasses are best planted in spring. When established, they are draught-tolerant, but still need regular watering. Fountain grass is a carefree perennial, and can be propagated by division. Each year remove the previous year’s growth as soon as the winter snows melt. Plants can be cut back to within a few inches from the ground in early spring, but make sure to leave one-third of the previous year’s growth. If cutting later in the season, make sure not to cut new growth.
