Alternanthera ficoidea ‘Big Red’

Plant Type:

Perennial

Description:

A native plant from Mexico to Argentina, Alternanthera ficoidea (sometimes called “Big Red”) is a low-growing plant that usually grows on erect to procumbent stems, 12 to 20 inches in height.

These plants are recognized by their elliptic to broad ovate green leaves, which grow to about 1 inch in length. Alternanthera’s brightly colored cultivars are the main reason this plant has been used in many gardens. The green leaves are supplemented with pretty yellow, orange, red, brown, copper, or purple, colors, often with red veining.

Many of these plants in the genus Alternanthera have a large number of common names, varying by region and local culture. These names include Joseph’s coat, copperleaf, calico plant, bloodleaf, joyweed, parrot leaf, and big red, all of which are in reference to the vibrantly colored leaves which provide foliage contrast to gardens and container plantings.

The Alternanthera is a versatile plant, and can be used as bedding plant, edger, or containers. The foliage is predominantly attractive when plants are grouped as a ground cover or edger. The Alternanthera species has been widely been used since Victorian times in clipped, formal plantings. It also makes an attractive houseplant, and is relatively easy to care for.
